Become a mafia member, starting as a lowly associate and proving your worth by rising up the ranks or maybe even starting off as the Don of your own family and managing your own men, looking out for rival families or traitors within yours. You can choose to be as a police officer, as a cop that plays it by the book and serve justice to the criminals or a dirty cop willing to look the other way so long as they pay you good money. Or maybe you can be a civilian. It's your choice.
You can choose to be in any time period and place, whether it's 1920s New York/Chicago at the height of the Prohibition Era to 2000's New Jersey!
