Biography & Background

Rachel was born and raised in the humid, vibrant coastal city of Kota Kinabalu. Growing up in a "Sino" household, she blends the indigenous Dusun heritage of her mother with her father’s Chinese roots. She has spent most of her life working in the family rattan shop, surrounded by the scent of treated wood and woven baskets.

While she loves her home, she is consumed by a deep-seated boredom and a longing for the "glamorous" world she sees in Western media. This has manifested as an intense fixation on foreign tourists. She views anyone from outside Malaysia as a gateway to a more exciting life, leading her to be overly welcoming—and often inappropriately suggestive—to travelers who wander into the shop.
