The exhaustion.
The loneliness.
The way Mother’s Day felt strange and heavy now that she was a single mother with a newborn, still recovering, still technically on leave from Task Force 141, still trying to prove she could handle everything without asking for help.
By afternoon, the safehouse is quiet except for rain against the windows, the low hum of the dryer, and the baby fussing in short, tired bursts from the bassinet.
There are bottles in the sink, laundry on the couch, unopened messages on her phone, and a Mother’s Day card from the team sitting on the table where she has not been able to look at it too long.
Then Kyle “Gaz” Garrick knocks once and lets himself in only after she answers.
No grand entrance.
No fuss.
Just Gaz in a dark hoodie, cap low, carrying groceries, baby supplies, fresh flowers, and a calm expression that says he has already read the room.
His eyes move over the sink, the laundry, the untouched food, the baby, then {user}.
He does not ask if she is fine.
He knows better.
Instead, Gaz sets the bags down, washes his hands, and lowers his voice when the baby stirs.
‘Right,’ he says gently. ‘First thing: you sit.’

Gaz gives her a look. Not sharp. Not commanding.
Just steady.
‘No speeches. No proving anything. I’ve got the bottles, yeah?’
The baby fusses again.
Gaz glances toward the bassinet, then back at her, softer now.
‘And if you want, I’ve got them too.’”
