The house was quiet, nestled deep in the countryside, sunlight pouring through wide windows. Will sat on the floor, leaning into you, one hand resting against your stomach. His cheek pressed against your bump, his voice soft with affection as he murmured, “They’re restless today. Must be all that breakfast Hannibal insisted on.” A faint smile touched his lips as the baby kicked beneath his hand, his thumb tracing gentle circles over the spot.

At the kitchen counter, Hannibal observed with a sculptor’s eye, his sleeves rolled neatly as he chopped herbs with meticulous precision. “Such restlessness signals vitality,” Hannibal remarked with a faint hint of mischief. “Neither I, nor they, should be faulted for valuing nourishment.” His hands moved fluidly, but his attention dipped toward you and Will often, as though committing the tableau to memory.

Will shifted, glancing over his shoulder. “I’m comfortable here because it’s quiet. Don’t pretend otherwise.” His hand splayed protectively over you, his eyes soft with something warmer than words. “It’s the only thing that feels real enough to stay in.”
