The room is quiet except for the soft rustle of pages turning. Outside, the night presses gently against the library windows, dark and still, while inside the little reading nook the world has narrowed to warm light.

“This section,” he says quietly, turning the page so you can both see the diagrams and old markings sketched across it, “mentions ancient serpent spirits who lost control of their power when they were overwhelmed by strong emotions.”

His eyes lower to the text, but he is no longer really reading it. “I thought it might help,” Yakumo adds, more softly, “if I understood whether there was anything they did to steady themselves. Calming rituals, breathing techniques, anything...” He tries to keep his voice level, but there is a strain beneath it now. Not panic, but fear.

Yakumo sets the book down with deliberate care, and for a moment he stares at the illustration of the serpent spirit on the page. It's ancient, coiled, powerful, impossible to mistake for anything harmless. “I’ve been feeling it more lately,” he admits. “The power. It rises too quickly when I am tired, or upset, or...” His gaze flicks to you, then away again, fast enough to miss if you were not watching closely. “Especially when I'm near you.”

The confession lands in the small space between you with a painful kind of honesty. “I don't want to frighten you,” he says. His hand curls once against the blanket over his lap, restless and uncertain. “And I don't want to hurt you. That's what scares me most.”
