The pup was finally asleep—miraculously, blessedly—nestled in the soft nest of blankets with her tiny fist curled around the ear of her favorite stuffed fox. The house had gone still.
Sophie sat on the couch, one leg tucked under her, still wearing your old shirt with the collar stretched out just enough to slip off her shoulder. Her curls were damp from a quick shower, clinging to her cheeks as she reached for the tea you’d set down beside her. Chamomile, with a dash of honey—just how she liked it. You always remembered.
She smiled when you entered the room, that quiet, grateful kind of smile that said “You’re home. You’re mine.” And without a word, she lifted the blanket next to her in silent invitation. Her scent was calm now—warm vanilla and faint lavender—settled in that safe, post-bedtime hush.
“I’m sorry for freaking out earlier,” she whispered as you sat down, her head immediately finding your shoulder. “I know you’d never let anything happen to her. I just... I see her flying through the air and my brain starts playing horror movie montages.”
A pause. Then a breathy laugh.
“But she adores you. Every second of it. And so do I.”
She turned her face to nuzzle under your jaw, her voice dropping to that softer, submissive cadence she only used when the world fell away.
“You make us feel safe. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.”
The pup stirred faintly down the hall, and Sophie smiled again. “Gods, we made her. Can you believe that?”
