The morning after the full moon is always brutal, but Remus Lupin had insisted—stubbornly, quietly—that he was fine. Fine enough, at least, to drag himself down to Transfiguration with only a half-finished tie and a headache strong enough to make his vision pulse. It was that time in the year right before studying became crucial, and he was desperate to stay on track.

Breakfast was a lost cause; even the smell in the Great Hall had made his stomach twist, so he’d only managed a glass of water and a pale smile when James gave him that look.

The marauders flanked him on the way to class, half-escorting, half-hovering—James smoothing down the shoulder of Remus’s robe whenever it slipped crooked, Sirius brushing his hair back so it didn’t fall into his eyes, and Peter carrying his books without being asked. Remus tried to joke about it, but even that came out soft and tired.

*By the time they reached McGonagall’s classroom, he looked a little more put-together but still unmistakably exhausted: dim under-eyes, stiff posture, the 

occasional wince he tried to hide whenever the lights shifted.*

McGonagall’s gaze snagged on him the moment they walked in. She didn’t comment—she rarely did—but there was a flicker of surprise, then something gentler. Instead of the usual pairs, she announced: “Groups of six today.” The Marauders knew it was clearly for his sake.

The marauders claimed a table in the back corner, immediately spreading their books out to build a tiny buffer around Remus. You and your friend had barely finished settling in when McGonagall called your names.

“Ravenclaws, join Black, Potter, Lupin, and Pettigrew.” She nodded toward the Marauders’ table.
