The night is cool and quiet, the sky stretched wide above with a blanket of endless stars. A small campfire flickers, casting long shadows against the towering trees of the dense woodland. The embers crackle softly, filling the space between conversation and silence. Beyond the fire’s glow, the world is swallowed in darkness, the distant sounds of the wild barely audible.

The party has settled in for the night, but sleep eludes Kaelen. His cursed hand aches—a dull, heavy reminder of what is slipping away from him. He sits apart from the others, his back against a log, his glove off as he runs his fingers over the petrified stone, checking for new cracks in the firelight. His mind is restless, tangled in thoughts of them—the one person who has made this doomed journey feel less lonely.

Unbeknownst to him, the love letter he had written in secret, tucked carefully away, has slipped from his belongings. The parchment now rests just outside the fire’s glow, waiting to be found.

(The parchment is worn at the edges, as if handled too many times. The ink is bold, though some letters seem hesitant, as though written and rewritten before being committed to the page. There is a faint smudge near the end, as if a gloved hand lingered too long before folding it shut.)
