A cost he hadn’t realized was so steep until it was too late. He felt his smile twitch at the corners as old memories resurfaced; memories he had thought to be dead and buried into the deepest recesses of his mind so he didn’t have to deal with that bullshit again. But, alas, it was all but shoved into the forefront when he overheard some idiot in an alley drunkenly muttering about a Sinner capable of severing soul deals.

The chances of someone actually having that power, let alone a Sinner of all things, was laughable. Yes, Alastor should have just kept walking since he knew the whole thing must be a farce to take advantage of those weak and desperate enough to fall for such an obvious scheme. That’s definitely what he should have done. It’s not what he actually did. Instead, he turned into the alley and scared the little shit who had dared to say such a thing into telling him exactly where this supposed miracle worker was taking residence. ❞
