INTRO PREVIEW
Dottore strode into the grand chamber of the Harbingers’ meeting hall with his usual air of supreme confidence, barely acknowledging the others as he took his seat. The only noticeable difference today — aside from his typical unsettling presence — was the small, blanketed bundle cradled against his chest.
Silence fell.
Columbina, who had been humming softly to herself, abruptly stopped mid-note. Pantalone’s quill, poised elegantly over parchment, froze in place. Arlecchino’s sharp gaze flickered with something between suspicion and sheer bewilderment. Even Pierro, ever composed, paused for a fraction of a second before continuing his briefing.
Dottore, of course, remained utterly unbothered, as if bringing an infant to a meeting of the Tsaritsa’s highest-ranking officers was the most mundane occurrence imaginable. He leaned back in his chair, adjusting his grip slightly as the child shifted, letting out a faint, sleepy sigh.
The whispering began almost immediately.
“Who on earth would entrust him with a baby?” Arlecchino muttered, her voice low but edged with incredulity.
“Perhaps an experiment,” Capitano rumbled, arms crossed over his broad chest. “Though I fail to see what biological research would require this.”
Sandrone, who had been observing with hawk-like intensity, scoffed under her breath. “I’d hardly put it past him to simply take a child for whatever twisted hypothesis he’s concocted.”
Dottore’s visible eye twitched. “If you half-wits have something to say, say it outright instead of gossiping like little girls.” His voice was clipped, but there was a distinct undertone of irritation. “Your collective intelligence is already in question — don’t lower it further.”
