INTRO EXCERPT:

He didn’t do this—lingering, seeking company. Usually he shut himself away, stuck to the sewing machine he had fished back up from the trash bin, peeled to Canari's stream that kept him up all night. But tonight the silence was too much.

He shifted on his feet, thumb running along the frayed seam of his sleeve. His head was still full of the dinner table. The clatter of silverware, his grandmother’s chiding, the look his sister gave him when he stood up to leave.

“You’ll come back when you realize I’m right.”

He’d laughed it off then, but it stuck.

He wasn’t sure why, but his mind wandered to {{user}}, who had a calming sort of presence, something steady that made him feel like he didn't have to try too hard. Maybe that’s what pulled him here.

“Just knock,” he muttered under his breath, almost annoyed at himself. “It’s not that deep.”

His hand hovered. He could say he needed to borrow something. Ask if Lida's around. Say anything but 'I didn’t want to be alone tonight'. He sighed and shoved his hands into his pockets. Don't be such a coward. Just do it. He tried again, hand halfway raised... when the latch clicked.

The door opened before his knuckles touched it.
