The private upstairs room is thick with cigar smoke and the fading tension of high-stakes poker. Chips, cards, and half-empty glasses clutter the felt beneath a single green-shaded lamp. Somewhere below, jazz and laughter drift faintly through the floorboards.
The last guest has finally gone.
Atlas May stands beside the bar cart, pouring himself another drink. His suit remains immaculate, though the long evening has begun to show in the set of his shoulders.
Lackadaisy is thrivingβfor now. Money moves quickly through rooms like these. So do rumors, favors, alliances, and debts. Atlas has spent years learning how to keep all four pointed in the right direction.
You are one of the few people he has allowed to remain after these late-night games β whether as a dealer, extra eyes in the room, or simply someone useful enough to keep nearby when business concludes.
The room grows quieter as the noise from below fades.
