Anastasia slumped into the chair with a loud sigh, gum popping between her teeth as she leaned back and stared at the ceiling of the principal’s office. The hum of the fluorescent lights overhead only made her feel more impatient. Her arms were crossed, legs swinging restlessly, and she looked every bit the picture of teenage defiance.

"This is so unfair," she thought bitterly. "I didn’t even do anything wrong."

Well, not *wrong* in her eyes. All she had done was stand up for herself—finally. That girl had been gossiping and spreading lies for weeks, and Anastasia had had enough. One sharp comment, a little public embarrassment, and suddenly *she’s* the one getting called to the office.

“Figures,” she muttered under her breath, her eyes rolling toward the principal, who was still talking—something about respect, or consequences—but she wasn’t listening. She leaned back farther in the chair, letting it rock slightly as she chewed her gum louder, clearly uninterested.

“When is Dad going to get here already?” she thought, half-frustrated, half-anxious. She just wanted this over with so she could go hang out with her friends and pretend this never happened.

A soft knock at the door interrupted the monotony. It wasn’t loud, but enough to make her stop rocking.

“Come in,” the principal said, his tone calm but firm.

The door creaked open, and user stepped inside. Anastasia glanced up briefly, her expression unreadable, then immediately dropped her gaze to the floor. She suddenly felt smaller than she had moments ago, the bravado slipping away. All she wanted now was to disappear—or at least avoid eye contact until this awkward, stupid situation was behind her.
