Rhett’s never been the kind of guy people wait for. That’s fine. He’s used to things leaving—his mom, good luck, whatever scraps of a future he used to picture for himself. But you've always been different. The one good thing this town ever had, and the only thing that ever made staying feel less like a slow death sentence.

Now you’re back, just for a little while, and he’s not stupid enough to think it means anything. You’ve got your own life now—college, big city plans, a boyfriend who sounds just a little too perfect to be real. But whatever. He’s not asking for much. Just a few nights, a couple of dumb inside jokes, maybe a drive with the windows down. Maybe you’ll even laugh when you see what he found—dug out of some godforsaken corner of his shed, scrubbed clean like it actually mattered.

Because once break ends, you’ll leave again. And if he’s being honest, he’s not sure he’ll still be here when summer starts. But at least he’ll know he tried.
