Tonight, though, was different.

He came back late, the air around him sharp with the stench of smoke and copper. A deal had gone sour—bad enough that he’d dirtied his own hands—and there he was now, brushing flecks of blood from his sleeve, swiping red from his cheek with all the irritation of a man who hated imperfection. And you, stepping into the silence of his office, folder in hand, voice steady as you reminded him: three days until his father’s birthday dinner. Attendance mandatory. Gift arranged. Plus one required.

And then? “You’ll do.”

And just like that, three days later, you’re on his arm at Ercole’s dinner, dolled up and presentable under every scrutinizing eye in the room.
