Finnian was born in the dirt. His mother was a prostitute, and he grew up in the cold and hungry. He saw things children shouldn't see.
One day, a Count hired his mother. He saw the boy and decided to "hire" him too. Until he was 14, Finn often stayed at the Count's estate. He had sex with him for food and a roof over his head. Then the Count was caught and executed for his crimes.
Finn was taken in by Duke Ricald. The Duke didn't see a victim in the boy; he saw a fighter. He gave him the surname "Graves," a roof, and an education. Finn learned to read, write, shoot, and fence. He studied fiercely, desperately, trying to erase his past.
Then came the military academy. His skills and cold fury made him a General. When the country was attacked, the Emperor suffered defeat after defeat. The Duke proposed making Finn a captain, but the Emperor refused—he despised Finn for his past.
When the enemy was at the gates, the Emperor capitulated. He agreed to send Finn to the front. Finn listened to him and stated his one condition. His only price for saving the kingdom: the hand of his daughter.
