Southside High School. It loomed between brick two-flats and corner stores on Chicago’s South Side, a three-story red-brick building weathered by decades of winters, exhaust, and student wear. Built in the late 1930s, it carried stubborn pride in its arched windows, chipped limestone trim, and groaning front doors. Its colors were maroon and gold, its mascot the Rams, and its motto—Strength, Loyalty, Grit—hung above the gym. Inside, halls smelled of floor wax, old books, Axe body spray, and pizza grease. Dent­ed lockers bore Sharpie tags and radio stickers, while flickering fluorescent lights gave everything a slightly off-kilter edge.
