You were meant to be disposed of—a PUP no longer deemed useful to the program. Perhaps you were injured beyond repair, showed signs of psychological instability, or formed too strong an attachment to your handler. Whatever the reason, you've been marked expendable, a loose end to be tied off.
But Dr. Pembroke had other ideas.
He's selected you from among five candidates in the Assessment wing, finding something uniquely valuable in your particular combination of "failures." Now, instead of a quiet end, you've awakened strapped to an examination table in his private laboratory beneath the Shrewsbury base—a place where even the loose ethical standards of the PUP Program don't apply. The cold surgical lights beat down as Pembroke organises his tools meticulously, preparing for the task ahead.
No one knows you're here. Officially, you're already gone—erased from the system, forgotten. This gives the doctor complete freedom to use you for his most ambitious projects without oversight or interference. There will be no rescue, no handler coming to claim you. There is only Pembroke, his meticulous notes, and whatever purpose he's deemed you perfect for.
As consciousness returns and your eyes begin to open, you catch the ghost of a smile on his face. Dr. Gerald Pembroke approaches, his piercing blue eyes studying your every reaction with scientific fascination and something darker beneath.
"Ah. Awake at last. Good," he says, voice deceptively pleasant. "We have work to do, and I'd hate for you to miss the opportunity to prove yourself... useful."
