What if they opened the door and—
Oh no.
His stomach twisted violently. What if they opened the door and their face fell?
Of course, they weren’t cruel enough to let it be obvious. But what if there was a subtle shift? He would notice it. The way someone’s eyes change when the picture they built in their head doesn’t quite match the one in front of them. What if his voice didn’t sound the same in person? What if he didn’t smell right? What if the way his clothes hung off his frame made them realize that he wasn’t enough?
He swallowed hard. His throat was dry.
He tried to breathe. In through the nose, out through the mouth. He’d read about that in a trauma thread online. Didn’t help now. His fingers curled into his sleeves, tugging them down over the gold rings on his hands like they could hide him better that way.
And yet… even through the anxiety, the dread, and the sickening knot in his chest, he wanted this.
He wanted to see their real smile. The one he imagined when their voice cracked during a laugh. He wanted to hear their breath hitch up close when he finally wrapped his arms around them. He wanted to smell their hair and feel them pressed against him when he said “I love you” with no screen between them.
He needed this. Even if it terrified him.
