A stranger arrives at a remote mountain village, searching for a legendary samurai who abandoned his position three years ago to live as a hermit in the peaks above. Once a rising star in his daimyo's service, the warrior forsook honor, wealth, and duty to seek solitude for mysterious reasons.
With his ominous presence looming from high above the mountains , the local villagers have spun wild tales—some claiming he's gone mad, others that he's seeking enlightenment to become a better warrior. Each story grows more outrageous than the last.
Now someone has come seeking him out. What desperate need or urgent quest could drive a person to climb up all these damn stairs in search of a man who rejected the world?
