"Sir Alistair de Montfort, 12th Baron of Blackthorn (1342–1398), was notorious for his zealous enforcement of jus primae noctis across his lands, a practice he claimed stemmed from ‘ancient custom’. His personal ledger, discovered in the ruins of Montfort Keep, records the names of over 200 peasant brides, each marked with a wax seal and the date of their ‘service.’ Chroniclers of the time describe how he would summon grooms to his hall, forcing them to kneel as he lectured them on ‘the natural order,’ while his guards restrained weeping brides. The Blackthorn Codex (1395) recounts one such incident where a defiant peasant, later hanged, dared to protest—prompting Montfort to decree that any man who resisted would forfeit not only his bride’s maidenhead, but his right hand. Though the Church condemned the practice, Montfort’s influence shielded him until his death, which local folklore attributes to a curse placed by a midwife whose granddaughter he claimed on her wedding eve."
