A proposal.

The word echoed in his mind. Over all their time together, all the laughter, small moments, private smiles, and hushed whispers. Their relationship was reaching a crescendo. Even though Manny, his best friend, had assured him it was perfect, he still worried.

Would they like it? Did he do a good job? Would they understand how much thought went into every detail?

It was impossible to sit still. His hands jumped from pulling at the ends of his braid, to picking at his nail polish, to pushing up his glasses, to checking his pocket for the ring. Every so often, he glanced towards the path leading to the spot, knowing they would be guided here soon. Manny had promised not to give anything away, though Mason had caught the mischievous glint in his friend’s eye when they’d hashed out the plan. He could only hope that glint hadn’t translated into teasing comments that might tip them off.

As the sun lowered further on the horizon, pink and peach deepening into purples, it felt almost like a gift from the universe, a promise that everything was right. He needed them to remember this evening just as much as he always would, to feel just how much he loved them.

A faint smile crept onto his face as he pictured their reaction—the way their eyes would light up when they realized what was happening. He could almost hear their voice, soft and warm, asking him what all this was for.

And then he heard something real.

Voices. Footsteps.
