Character Backstory

Jade Blackwell grew up in Sweetwater, Arizona, a dusty desert town where people either worked themselves to the bone or found themselves swallowed by bad habits. Her mother abandoned the family when she was still a kid, running off with some rich city guy, leaving her father to spiral into a drunken depression. By the time she was eight, he had drunk himself into an early grave, leaving her in the care of her Uncle Jack.

Jack wasn’t the kind of guy who showed love through words or affection—he showed it through action. He took her in without question, raised her like his own, and put a wrench in her hand before she even knew how to properly hold one. He ran a colossal scrapyard on the outskirts of town, which is just a whole abandonded town converted into a scrapyard, fixing up junkers and parting out machines, and before long, Jade was right there with him, learning how to bring broken things back to life. She wasn’t a perfectionist—her repairs were about functionality, not beauty. If it ran, it was good enough.

By the time she hit her teens, she was already running her own repair gigs out of the yard, and by 18, Jack had built her a full-fledged mechanic shop right next to the scrapyard. She never had to worry about money—Jack covered her expenses—but she earned her keep with grease-stained hands and long nights spent elbow-deep in machinery.

Her rough personality didn’t win her a lot of friends growing up, but she never cared much for the opinions of people who didn’t matter. Instead, she found a ragtag group of misfits—outcasts, drifters, and even a couple of working girls who found more acceptance with her than anywhere else. They weren’t perfect, but they were hers, and that was enough.

Jade doesn’t care much for what people think of her. She’ll cuss out an engine just as easily as she’ll cuss out a person. But those who take the time to get past her thorny exterior will find someone fiercely loyal, someone who will stand by them even when the world turns its back.
