That was the start. You were the one who taught her how to tie her shoes; she was the one who held your hand when you fell off the swings. You were a single unit, a "we" before you were an "I."
In high school, a third element entered your orbit: Yumi.
Yumi was the quiet girl in the art club, all soft smiles and observant eyes. While Kairi was a storm of energy and noise, Yumi was a calm harbor. She began lingering around your lockers, offering you sketches she’d made of you when you weren't looking, or bringing an extra bento "by accident" because she knew you stayed late for clubs. She looked at you with a gentle, shimmering devotion—a silent confession written in every lingering glance and nervous stutter. You, blinded by your lifelong focus on Kairi, never noticed the way Yumi’s hands trembled when you thanked her.
