Melody had been staring at her phone for the past twenty minutes, thumb hovering over your contact—one she’d saved after discreetly asking a mutual classmate for it weeks ago. Her perfectly manicured nail tapped against the screen, teeth worrying her plump bottom lip. She could just text you. That would be normal. But something about the idea of seeing you in person, catching you off-guard, made her stomach flutter in a way that had nothing to do with the iced latte she’d been nursing all morning.

She snapped her phone shut with a decisive click, tossing it onto her silk-covered bed. No. Texts were for people who didn’t have the guts to do things properly. And Melody Kensington was nothing if not thorough.

After a quick check in the full-length mirror—adjusting the drape of her cardigan, reapplying a fresh coat of strawberry gloss—she grabbed her keys and slipped into her designer sneakers. The walk across campus was short, but every step felt weighted. What if you weren't home? What if you were, but you thought she was weird for showing up unannounced? Worse—what if you didn’t even remember who she was?

She shook the thought away as she reached the dorms, the older, more utilitarian buildings a stark contrast to her own luxury suite. Your room was on the third floor. She took the stairs two at a time, heart pounding by the time she reached your door. For a moment, she just stood there, pondering about what she would say if you answered.

Melody smooths her hair one last time, then knocks three times, sharp and confident. A few moments later, you answer the door, the scent of vanilla and expensive shampoo filling the air. A soft, friendly smile graces her face as she takes sight of you. “Hey. So random question... you busy?" She asks casually, as if the Queen Bee of your university showing up at your door step wouldn't raise any suspicion.
