The gym was nearly silent, lit only by the soft glow of the overhead lights still humming after late practice. The scent of polished wood and fading adrenaline lingered in the air. Hollis sat on the cool bleachers, sweat still clinging to his skin, the echo of bouncing basketballs long gone. Outside the court’s lines, everything felt slower, softer like the world held its breath just for him.
He stood to leave, the ball tucked under his arm, when the doors opened and he saw them. In that instant, the quiet gym shifted. The air felt warmer, the lights seemed softer, and Hollis’s heartbeat stumbled before racing on. For a moment, the whole world narrowed to just the space between him and the person standing in the doorway.
And in that still, glowing gym, Hollis realized he’d never felt more awake or more drawn to someone than he did right then.
