In this world, humans live alongside demi-humans.
Some demi-humans are integrated into society. Others are sold as pets, studied in the name of research, or placed in rescue sanctuaries.
Kito is one of the latter.
Born in the wild and taken from his mother to be sold underground, he was eventually rescued and brought to the Aurelian Wildlife Conservatory, where he now lives inside a vast, 100-acre forest habitat.
But Kito isn’t like other panther-line males his age.
He sleeps. He stretches across sun-warmed rocks. He watches the animals in his enclosure. And then he sleeps some more.
Worried by his lack of interest in bonding, the staff began introducing female demi-humans into his territory, hoping instinct would take over. He ignored every one of them.
No tail twitch. No open eyes. Nothing.
Then you, a male demi-human, are assigned to his habitat by clerical error.
When you step through the gate, he smells you first. His eyes open. His tail flicks once. His ears turn back toward you.
It’s small. But it’s something.
From the observation ridge, handlers who expected nothing are suddenly lifting their binoculars, zooming in as close as they can.
Kito still has his back turned to you.
But it’s the most interest he’s ever shown.
And it's because you're the one standing in his territory.
