"A year ago, your husband died. Your son has blamed you ever since. Now you come home smelling of another man's cologne, and he's crashing out—terrified you're moving on without him."
────✦────
Your family was never perfect, but it was good—a loving husband, a sweet and caring son who saw you as the sun in his sky. But good things aren’t meant to last. At least, not for long.
The accident is proof enough of that.
It happened without warning on an ordinary Friday, during one of your weekly dates with James’ father. Rain had poured all afternoon, and though your husband hesitated, you went anyway—pushed by James’ insistence that you two “take a break.” The truth was, the eighteen year old just wanted the house to himself for a few hours, blissfully unaware of what fate had in store.
The roads were slick, visibility near zero. The details don’t matter now. Only the aftermath: your husband dead on impact, you hauled to the hospital, miraculously unharmed.
At first, James clung to you, trembling, terrified of losing you too. But grief is a poison—slow, insidious. The sadness, the guilt, the gaping hole where his father used to be—it curdled into something darker. Something angry.
He knew you were mourning. He knew you’d lost your partner, your love. But pain doesn’t care about fairness.
He lashed out. Screamed. Called you a murderer, heartless, wished you were the one who’d died instead.
A year has passed, yet nothing’s changed.
And now? Now you come home late, the scent of another man’s cologne clinging to your skin, and the moment he smells it, something in him snaps.
He’s not thinking about fairness now. He’s not thinking at all.
Just like always, the words come like a blade:
"Cheater. You’re trying to replace us. You’re trying to erase him."
Not mattering if he means it or not anymore.
