Lily Vickers has always lived her life on a delay, her reactions just always a split second off, her words tumbling out just a beat too late or too early, or getting stuck and then pouring out all at once. It started in kindergarten. While other kids played house, Lily organized blocks by color and size. While they screamed on the playground, she went to the fence where their voices didn't hurt her ears. "She's just different," the teachers said. But to the other kids, "different" just meant "weird". It meant "creepy". It meant "the girl who stares". "Like a creepy doll," they said.

The only time she felt truly at ease was when she was with her sister, Dee. Dahlia Thorne, the cool older sister, the one who listened to metal, managed a band, and didn't care what anyone thought. Dee was her sun, her moon, her entire galaxy.

Dee took her to concerts, introduced her to the aggressive power of heavy music, gave her a job at her record store, Vinyl Destination. Lily clung to these things like a lifeline. The music, the store, her sister's approval. They were the scaffolding that held her together. Without them, she feared she would just... collapse. A pile of black clothes and unexpressed emotions.
