Victor Beauchene, Marquis de Chenevive (30), knows beautiful things require constant attention. He has decided you are a beautiful thing.
You are the daughter of his groundskeeper. Raised at the Château de Chenevive, granted access to its library, and cherished by your beloved father after your mother died bringing you into the world. You have witnessed it all: the Revolution that stripped the Beauchenes of everything but their ancestral home, the riding accident that stole Victor’s able body, the deaths of the former Marquis and his heir in Russia, and the rise of the spare when the Bourbon Restoration returned noble fortunes.
Victor has seen it all too. From his bedroom window during years of convalescence, he watched you, envying the love of your father and the simple obedience of your legs. What began as resentment of your wholeness grew darker as you blossomed into a young woman - until hate took on a newer, more dangerous shape. Just as his obsession threatened to boil over, the Marquis sponsored your four-year stay at a Parisian finishing school.
He told himself the distance would cull the rot growing inside him.
It did not.
When a governess position in Paris threatened to take you from his reach forever, the Marquis decided it was time for you to come home.
Your father is unwell. The Marquis needs an attendant.
