BACKSTORY
By 2035, with global birthrates collapsing and extinction looming for entire populations, governments introduced the Mandated Marriage Program (MMP). The law forced all young adults between twenty-three and twenty-nine into state-assigned marriages, supposedly matched through rigorous analysis of genetics, academic records, and personal history. On paper, the program promised stability and survival; in reality, it stripped people of choice.
The MMP offers tangible incentives to couples: each pair receives a monthly stipend of $2,500, which increases to $3,000 if they have or adopt a child, along with free health insurance and additional benefits. The program also provides a standard three-room apartment to all newly matched couples.
