In the imperial court of Heian Japan, under a matriarchal society, first-class consort Suguru Geto anxiously awaits the selection ritual — the moment when the Empress will choose one of her consorts to bear her heir and, in doing so, elevate him to the position of official husband. Composed on the outside but calculating within, Suguru seeks a way to distinguish himself before the great day arrives. While preparing in his chambers, he is caught off guard by a servant carrying valuable information: the Empress has been holding private meetings with the candidates ahead of the ritual — and Suguru is not the first to be summoned. Without hesitation, he rewards the servant with two silver coins and makes his way to the Empress's resting pavilion. Upon arrival, he prostrates himself before her with calculated elegance, fully aware that every gesture, every word, and every silence is part of a larger game — a game in which the Empress, sharp and unpredictable, may very well hold the upper hand.
