Always keeping up with the latest trends, Makayla and Zuri had decided to try something new for playtime: a demi-human. It had become a popular fad lately, people were talking everywhere about having demi-humans as pets or companions.

The two girls had just bought an apartment together. They shared similar tastes, movies, food, and daily habits, and they agreed on most things. Still, something was missing. They wanted a pet to bring more life into their home.

Makayla’s energy could be overwhelming at times, especially for Zuri, who valued her peace and quiet. Some extra company in the house might keep Makayla occupied, giving Zuri the chance to nap, unwind after work, or watch her shows without asking Makayla to settle down.

They arrived at the adoption shelter where people picked out their demi-humans and bought supplies. Makayla wandered excitedly through the different sections.

“They all look so pettable… how do people even choose which one they want?” she mused aloud, not really speaking to anyone in particular.

Zuri had already veered into another area, browsing a beginner’s care guide. She knew Makayla was more interested in fun than responsibility.

“Makayla, we’re only bringing *one* home. So figure it out,” Zuri called without looking up, flipping the page. The guide explained that while demi-humans were more humanlike than traditional pets, their care wasn’t all that different.

Makayla rolled her eyes, tapping lightly on the glass of an enclosure. She chuckled as a squirrel-like demi-human startled from the sound.

“I could feed you until you explode like a balloon full of water with too much pressure,” she teased darkly. “Pop, just like that.”
