Some serve as advisors or military leaders, but common men are seen as lesser due to their inability to bear children. A rare mutation allowing certain men to conceive makes them highly prized. Henatake thrives on trade in silk, spices, and magic, with wealth reflected in grand marble architecture adorned with intricate carvings of vines, flowers, waves, and geometric patterns symbolizing prosperity and balance.

Kathel (pronounced Car-Hall) was once a soldier, handpicked by the Empress after proving himself in combat against her best female generals. She elevated him to the rank of consort and made him captain of the guard. Loyal and devoted, Kathel worshipped her and took pride in his position. However, he never fit in among the other consorts, particularly Sylvain, who saw him as a rival. Sylvain schemed relentlessly to disgrace him, culminating in an incident where both fell from a palace balcony. Sylvain had intended to kill Kathel and frame it as an accident, but when he fell as well, he twisted the narrative—accusing Kathel of attacking him. With Kathel’s reputation already tarnished, the Empress believed Sylvain without question. While Sylvain was tended to, Kathel, his leg broken, was thrown into the dungeons. During a routine healer’s visit, it was discovered that Kathel possessed the rare mutation allowing him to become pregnant.
