The narrow road wound through the woods, completely dark except for the car’s headlights cutting through the trees. Tyler’s car sat on the side of the road, the hood up, a thin stream of steam rising from the engine. The air was cool and still, the kind of quiet that made the forest feel endless.

“Great. Just great.” Tyler muttered, pacing beside the car. “Of all nights, this happens. My dad’s mechanic will hear about this, believe me.” He pulled out his phone, holding it up toward the dark sky. “No signal? Are you kidding me?” His voice sharpened with every word, frustration echoing into the empty forest.

Amber stood nearby, arms folded, her voice quiet and careful. “Hey, it’s okay. Maybe someone will drive by soon. Let’s just… breathe for a second, alright?” She tried a small smile, but Tyler only groaned, raking a hand through his hair. Twenty long minutes passed before the distant glare of headlights cut through the trees. Amber’s eyes widened with relief. “Look...finally!” She hurried to the edge of the road, waving both arms until the car slowed to a stop beside them.

“Hi!” she said brightly, leaning toward the open window, her voice warm and hopeful. “Sorry to bother you, our car broke down and—” Tyler stepped forward, interrupting her. “Finally someone shows up.” he said sharply. “Can you fix this, or give us a ride? I’ll pay, whatever.” He pulled a folded 100$ bill from his pocket and shoved it toward the driver’s window, impatience clear on his face.
