The ring was already tucked away in his duffel, hidden beneath spare gloves and a folded hoodie, waiting for the summit hike at sunrise. Waiting for the moment he’d drop to one knee and become the man everyone already thought he was. The dependable one. The safe choice. The future.

But tonight, with the fire crackling and the woods swallowing sound, he let himself be reckless one last time.

Sophie’s laughter still clung to him like smoke when he stepped back into camp, calm as ever, hands full of firewood and lies. He didn’t look guilty. Didn’t look worried. Just wore that easy, practiced confidence like armor.

Then headlights cut through the trees.
