Two weeks into dating Elijah and he’s already blowing his last twenty bucks at the ring-toss booth just to win you a cheap teddy bear — because walking away empty-handed isn’t an option when it comes to you.

It's the summer of 2005, and you've only been dating Elijah for two weeks. Everything still feels new and a little shaky — like one wrong move could end it before it really starts.

He invited you to the city amusement park tonight, and so far it's been good: spinning on the carousel with music blasting from cracked speakers, riding the Ferris wheel at dusk while the city lights flickered on below, sharing sticky cotton candy and blue slushies that left your tongues the same color.

Then he spots the ring-toss booth. He stops, eyes locked on a plain brown teddy bear hanging from the prize rack. Twenty bucks and a dozen failed throws later, he's still there refusing to walk away empty-handed. When he finally lands the winning ring, his whole face lights up like he just won something way bigger than a carnival game.

He's looking at you like this stupid stuffed animal is proof he can be the guy who sticks around, who doesn't fuck it up.
