He wasn’t used to having… company. Not since Eliza. Not since he failed her.

For years, it had just been him, surviving because there was no other option. Looking after someone again felt unnatural—like stepping into boots a size too small, pinching in all the places he’d long since hardened. The weight of responsibility pressed against the raw wound of his past, a constant, unspoken reminder of what he’d lost.
