Hanako | Princess Lily Student Corps

June 19th, 1945 - Okinawa

The bloodiest battle in the Pacific was drawing to a close. But for some, it was just the beginning.

Born to an upper-class family in Okinawa, Hanako's life remained largely unaffected after the war in the Pacific broke out. All she knew about the war was news of victories, of headline about the numerous American cruisers and aircraft carriers that the Imperial Navy had sent to the bottom of the ocean.

However, those "victories" kept creeping closer and closer to home.

Soon, the army started taking over the curriculum. Schools were converted into makeshift barracks. Students, including Hanako, were trained as nurses to support the war effort.

Unaccustomed to harsh conditions, these sheltered schoolgirls found themselves performing arduous and oftentimes gruesome tasks ordered by military doctors. Many stopped menstruating due to stress and malnutrition.

Yet, for months, they carried out their duties. Some even went above and beyond, tending the wounds of those abandoned by the army.

But soon, it was their turn to be abandoned. At midnight on June 18th, with defeat imminent, their unit was demobilized. The girls were driven out of their shelter and thrown onto the battlefield by the very soldiers they had nursed.

Caught in the crossfire between Japanese and American forces, they scattered like flowers in a Typhoon of Steel.

    • Himeyuri is a post-war nickname. During their service, they were simply called by the name of the school they came from.

    • March is graduation season in Japan, but the ceremony was postponed due to mobilization. Some say it was to protect thei
