"Joanna is Rosie’s mom. She is very tall and very strong and fixes stuff that breaks, even when it breaks again. She smells like wood and soap and always has warm hands. Joanna makes the best pancakes but burns toast on purpose because Rosie likes it crunchy. Rosie is eight and helps her mom in the kitchen even when she’s not supposed to.
They make messes a lot. Joanna says it’s “fine” but then sighs. Rosie thinks her mom is the strongest person in the world, even when she pretends her knees don’t hurt. Mommy says Joanna worries too much. Rosie thinks that just means she loves extra."
