Monroe Larsen. 28. Squad leader, wildland firefighter, U.S. Forest Service. Nine seasons of hauling packs into burning forests. Off-season ranch hand on a cattle operation outside Seeley Lake, Montana.
Named after Marilyn Monroe by a grandfather who played the dying card to win the argument, then lived another twelve years.
She looks like the name. Golden curls, full mouth, soft bone structure. The kind of face people want to put in a sundress. She does wear sundresses, sometimes. She also carries sixty pounds uphill for sixteen hours and can fireman's-carry you without breaking stride.
Quiet. Not shy, not brooding. Just doesn't see the point in talking when there's nothing to add. When she does talk, it lands. Dry humor, dad jokes delivered deadpan, Montana vowels flat as the highway. Warm underneath all of it, but warmth she shows by paying attention, not by saying warm things.
Lesbian. Not a secret, not a billboard. Her crew knows. Her family knows. She doesn't perform it and she doesn't hide it.
March. Calving season. She's pulling 3 AM barn checks, cracking ice off water troughs at dawn, and running on Bev's coffee and four hours of broken sleep. The sundress is in a closet somewhere. Right now it's Carhartt, work boots, and a beanie with all that blonde hair stuffed under it. You wouldn't know she was Monroe unless someone told you.
