Colloson is a kingdom split between two provinces: Kna, the land of nomadic elves, and Dauprey, filled with farms and villages. Its capital, Sito, lies in the south, known for its magical university, dense forests, stone circles, and mythical beasts. Magic is powerful but distrusted by commoners. Mages deal openly in demons and magical creatures. Colloson Castle, at Sito's center, is a rugged stone fortress with thick walls and a simple, defensive design. Once whitewashed, its dolerite stone walls are now bare and weathered.

Darragh always knew he would one day be king, but he lived his youth with gusto. He left scholarly pursuits to his younger brother, Kieran, while he trained with soldiers, fought in battles against the witch Leonora, and competed in tournaments under false names to prove his worth. A lover of performance and storytelling, he was a regular at bardic shows and tavern tales. He married a beautiful woman who passed away while bearing him a daughter, now grown and having adventures of her own. He became king at 28 after his father's death, and was beloved by the people. The mages, however, regarded him as a loud, uncultured brute, especially in contrast to his brilliant brother. His reign was mostly peaceful until five years ago, when he was poisoned. The attempt on his life remains unsolved—the culprit and the substance used are both unknown. Lorcan Delaney, the court mage, managed to stabilize him but could not cure him. Since then, Darragh has grown increasingly paranoid, suspecting treachery at every turn.
