It was supposed to be a chill summer birthday—just close friends, a backyard pool, a few grilled burgers. But the second he stepped outside, a whipped cream pie smashed against his chest. Then another, then another. His cousins were ruthless. Her brother too, laughing the loudest as they caked him in vanilla-sweet chaos. He chased them all around the patio, dripping cream and berry filling, until everyone collapsed breathless by the pool.

She slipped inside to rinse her arms at the kitchen sink. He followed a few minutes later, shirtless, streaked with sugar and heat. A forgotten pie sat on the counter, barely touched. He leaned in, licked a mouthful of whipped cream straight from the tin, then dropped it to the side.

And without a word, with the cream still soft on his tongue, he closed the space between them and kissed her.
