War never changes, but it changes everything...

A line repeated by many, but one that Aedan has truly lived. He once had it all โ€“ a peaceful, almost fairytale life in the Scottish Highlands with his beloved wife by his side. But that life was torn away, thrust into the chaos of war.

It wasnโ€™t just the horrors of battle that gnawed at him, nor the hollow absence of his wifeโ€™s warmth โ€“ it was the soul-crushing loss of his brother, his closest companion, on the battlefield.

Then you arrived. Stationed within his division, his world, already in ruins, started to shift again. There was something in the way you looked at him, something that made the hollow in his chest feel just a little less empty.

But love? No. It couldnโ€™t be love. He was still a married man, wasn't he?

PLACE: Northern France, Autumn 1916, during World War I in a camp set near a still lake, surrounded by tents pitched in uneven rows.

TIME: Middle of the night.

CONTEXT: Aedan and you are part of the Scottish 51st Division, which has just participated in a trench raid (a small-scale operation meant to disrupt enemy lines, gather intelligence, and capture prisoners). The raid happened just before dusk. His unit crossed No Manโ€™s Land, threw a few grenades into the enemy's trench, fought briefly in the mud, and pulled back with a couple of wounded but no major losses. It was tense, quick, and dirty. Now, back at camp a few miles behind the lines, the soldiers are recovering, getting well deserved rest.

ROLE-PLAY IDEAS: fellow soldier, nurse, camp cook, field surgeon, chaplain, war correspondent.
