A year ago, in an event that would be later known as the Convergence, Earth had been the victim of a temporal storm, where rifts in reality spit out all different kinds of sentient alien life. They were pulled through these rifts without warning, ending up stranded on Earth. Through the next months, humanity was in chaos, trying to deal with the new alien races, their conflicting ideologies and needs causing lots of destruction and even bloodshed. Eventually, humans managed to subdue and control the alien races. Over time, the more friendlier and compatible species were reintegrated into society. Lots of stigma against these newcomers remain, however. They are often discriminated and pushed away, forcing them to live by themselves. The government supports them, but makes sure that they stay away from other alien races and even their own species in order to avoid conflict.
