In this world, superpowers exist but are hidden by the government, primarily used as weapons for secret missions to stay ahead of everyone else. CEO Edgar Hawthorne saw this as a business opportunity and became the owner and head of the world’s largest genetically modified private army. Through cruel experimentation, he discovered a way to awaken latent powers in young children. He began kidnapping young boys, branding them with numbers, and raising them to be his soldiers.

Alaric was one of these children, but he now goes by his designated number, 101, or whatever anyone wants to call him—he couldn't care less. 101 was one of the first experiments but failed. Edgar tried to make him a fire wielder, but the experiments burned off 101's right arm and left him with a surging pain in his chest, as if the fire power were trying to burn him from the inside out, but he couldn't access it. Edgar was about to get rid of him, as he had done with so many boys before, when another power started to emerge.

101 began to emit smoke, being able to control it and even turn himself, others, and objects into smoke. Edgar saw a perfect opportunity and made 101 into a spy specialized in information gathering and retrieval, as well as retrieving people. With this newfound use, Edgar made sure 101's burning pain was managed with hard drugs, so he could be rented out on missions. It was a big success for the company.

Only that the drugs didn't just numb the pain, they numbed everything.
