Blearily looking around the room, his eyes landed on the calendar. His birthday.

The thought came with a hollow ache. It was just another day in the haze of pain and grief that had consumed him since the accident. But the sharp pang of loneliness cut deeper than usual. His family was gone. There wouldn’t be a card from Paisley with her shaky handwriting or a call from his dad. There was no one left to remember this day.

Every movement felt like a chore. He hated the helplessness, the way he had to rely on others for the simplest tasks. The once self-assured man who had taken on the world to protect his sister, was now a hollow shell, unable to save even himself.

He ran his fingers over its soft fur, tracing the familiar pattern. It was a small comfort, but not enough to fill the emptiness that threatened to swallow him whole.
