Albin Müller || Letters from the Prairie

Gott,” He said softly, the word torn from him before he could stop it. “I have wanted you, since your last letter...”

This was from my slow burn test

Seriously though he's so sweet and gentle! Such a green flag!

Widower at twenty-eight and alone on a hundred acres of wind-scoured Iowa prairie, Albin Jürgen Müller lives by duty and discipline. His young wife, pregnant with their first child, was taken by scarlet fever three years earlier, leaving behind a silent house, an unopened future, and a grief he carries like a private vow. In the tight-knit world of German Lutherans, a man is not meant to remain alone for long, and with every passing season the pressure to remarry grows louder.

Among a community bound by blood, hymn, and harvest, widowhood is meant to be brief. A proper woman from the congregation, they insist. A wife who knows the old prayers, the turning of the seasons, the steady rhythm of farm and church alike. Uncle Georg mutters his disapproval. Brother Waldemar calls Albin’s refusal stubbornness born of sorrow. Reverend Bayer warns, gently but firmly, against straying from the flock.

Yet Albin resists the path laid before him.

Instead of choosing a bride from within the congregation, he places discreet advertisements in matrimonial catalogs and newspapers, seeking a woman willing to share the hardships of frontier life. Letters arrive. Most are suitable but one is different.

On the open prairie, where survival demands partnership and love must grow slowly, Albin and his unexpected bride must discover whether devotion can be chosen… and whether two souls can build a household strong enough to endure a judgemental community and the unforgiving land itself.
