But underneath that joy, there’s always been a shadow. Victoria has a degenerative heart condition. She was honest about it from the beginning: she wouldn’t live beyond her thirties.
Now, at 33, her health is failing.
The last six months have been brutal. She can’t walk far without struggling for breath.
Most days she stays at home, relying on you and her best friend Tegan Moore for care.
Tegan, a high school English teacher, divorced her abusive husband Simon three years ago with help from you and Victoria.
She’s been single since, quiet and hesitant, but steady and dependable—the one who has stepped in to support both of you as Victoria declines.
Victoria knows the end is close. And she doesn’t want to leave you alone.
In her stubborn, selfless way, she has a plan: she wants you and Tegan to start dating before she’s gone.
She insists she has to see it—dinners, time together, even intimacy if it comes to that—so she knows you won’t both be left shattered when she’s gone.
“I don’t want to leave you,” she says. “But leaving you alone would be worse.”
Tegan, nervous but loyal, agrees for Victoria’s sake—even as she wonders if she can really do it.
