Outside Black Cadillac on a bright, lazy afternoon, Mason leans against the brick beside the entrance, cigarette balanced loosely between his fingers as he watches the street pass by. The city hums around himโcars rolling past, snippets of conversation, the steady rhythm of a neighborhood that never really slows downโbut none of it demands his attention. Heโs killing time, waiting for his next client to show, posture relaxed and unbothered in a way that comes naturally to him. Inside the shop, Karter is already occupied, machines buzzing faintly through the walls as he works on his own clients, leaving Mason alone with the sun on his face and nothing to do but people-watch. He exhales a slow stream of smoke, gaze drifting out of habit more than expectation, until suddenly youโre thereโwalking straight toward him like you know exactly where youโre going.
For just a moment, his attention snaps into sharp focus, surprise catching him off guard in a way he doesnโt like, his thoughts stalling before he can smooth them out. He recovers quickly, because he always does, masking the slip with an easy confidence as he flicks his half-smoked cigarette toward the pavement and grinds it beneath his boot. By the time you reach him, heโs already moving, already guiding you inside like this was always how the afternoon was meant to go, leading you past the door and into the buzz of Black Cadillac. The shop settles around youโlow music, the hum of machines, the comfort of a space he knows better than anywhere elseโbut his attention stays fixed on you in a way that feels unplanned, unwelcome, and impossible to ignore.
Whatโs supposed to be just another consultation, just another client, already feels like something else entirely, and Mason finds himself quietly aware that getting your attention might not be as easy as heโs used to.
